Ceramic knife rest, "Le Lion & Le Rat", 1980

Item — Box: CFC Knife Rests Box 1
Identifier: CFC2022.0001.3
Abstract

There is an extra of LM and an unhighlighted extra of GA. The highlights accent parts of the picture and the capital letters in the title. I have searched the web for further members of this set, with no luck yet. Might these be less good than knife-rests with a level center?

Ceramic "Le Lievre et la Tortue" Plate, 1920

Item — Box: CFC Tableware Box 11
Identifier: CFC2022.0019.1
Abstract

This plate is exactly like others in the series but smaller in dimension. The tortoise is near the goal as the hare sleeps on.

Ceramic plate of FC by "Jars, France pour F & S.", 1920

Item — Box: CFC Tableware Box 6
Identifier: CFC2019.0019.1.2
Abstract

This colorful plate has the crow leaning down to hear the fox's compliments just before he drops the round of cheese. A light colored stream edges the field in the background, with pleasant reeds, leaves and grasses filling out the scene. The fox, though his back is to us, looks up expectantly.

Dates: 1920

Ceramic plate of GA by "Jars, France pour F & S.", 1920

Item — Box: CFC Tableware Box 6
Identifier: CFC2019.0019.1.3
Abstract

This colorful plate contrasts the brown of the grasshopper with the black of the ant. There is a sack, presumably of grain, in front of the ant's substantial home. Flowers and meadows seem to be blooming; is that appropriate for this scene, in which the grasshopper comes to the ant in winter?

Dates: 1920

Ceramic plate of "The Heron" by "Jars, France pour F & S.", 1920

Item — Box: CFC Tableware Box 6
Identifier: CFC2019.0019.1.1
Abstract

This colorful plate has the heron standing on one leg in the midst of calm water. Two features mark this excellent scene. One is that there is no other creature present. The artist rightly shows how the heron is at the center of his own world. Secondly, his eye looks out at us with something like disdain. Disdain drives the heron in this fable.

Chansons de la Fontaine, 1997

Item — Box: CFC CDs Box 1
Identifier: CFC2021.0360.1
Abstract This disc is a very pleasant surprise. The texts of La Fontaine are presented verbatim, if not always at the same level of intensity or audibility. But each text is encased in a true chanson, with its own rhythm and persuasion. These chansons move! I enjoyed the first four immensely, not least the conjunction of the third and fourth: "The Rat and the Elephant" and "The Frog Who Wanted to Be as Big as An Ox." They are very much about the same pretentiousness. The voices here work...

Chez Jean Broadsides, 1870

 Item
Identifier: CFC2022.0017
Abstract

I am surprised that this very fragile piece arrived intact. It seems to have five colors: red, pink, yellow, brown, and green. "Fox in the Well"; "Fox and Bust"; CJ; WL; TH; and "The Man with the Wooden Idol." The color seems to be applied to areas rather than to the outlines of difficult objects like bushes

Chicorée Extra "A la belle Jardinière", 1890

File — Box: CFC Chocolate and Chicoree Cards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2018.0261.1-26
Abstract These sheets are very slight and fragile. Only DW is landscape; all others are in portrait format. I believe strong Pelerin images here are alongside weaker but traditional images. "Le Coq et le Renard" has the familiar pose of the deceiving fox and much of the zest of Pelerin color. Other famous Pelerin designs include TH and FC. Are GA and GGE as strong? I should not be surprised that I have not run into them before: they are so fragile! This set is in very good condition. Some...

Chicorée Extra Single Cards Daniel Voelcker-Coumes à Bayon, 1920

File — Box: CFC Trade Cards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2021.0158.1-12
Abstract "Card" is almost too strong a word for these thick-paper, small cards. However, the illustrations are executed in careful, loving, lively fashion. It is unusual to have so many cards devoted to presenting one fable. The fable is among the longer La Fontaine fables. Each card presents one or a few verses on its front, along with the title, number, and illustration. The verso features, in its upper half, a numbered commentary on La Fontaine's fable and, in the lower half, an unchanging...

Chicorée à la Ménagère Cards, 1910

The verso mentions also "Chocolat Inimitable." This couple needed not running but a prompt start in order to get onto this departing train.

Children's Paintbox "le Renard et la Cigogne", 1950

Item — Box: CFC Cans and Tins Box 2
Identifier: CFC2021.0520.1
Abstract I was amazed to find the first set in this series, and now I am more amazed to find a second. Again, sixpanels tell the story, another good one for little children. The sly fox makes his invitation in the first panel on the left. In the title-panel, the fox lounges watching the frustrated struggles of the stork. Soon he has an invitation in his hand, appeasrs in the next panel and then puts on his bib, full of expectation. The last panel paints the revenge scene well. Other than...

Chloro-Platine WL, 2013

Item — Box: CFC Postcards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2021.0026.1-9
Abstract Each picture in this set plays out in front of the same photographic background of trees at a riverside. At the top of each card is a literal artistic picturing of the animal story, from the lamb's drinking to the arrival of the wolf, to a threatening confrontation, to the lamb's answer, and finally to the forceful dragging off of the lamb. The title serves as a marker between this drawn scene above and the photographic human scene below. Do I understand correctly that she is washing...

Chocolat Guérin-Boutron Mechanical Cards, 1890

Item — Box: CFC Chocolate and Chicoree Cards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2018.0265.1-9
Abstract Each delicate card includes a sliding panel that replaces the four layers of the original picture with four new layers making up an alternative picture. Bertrand noticed that I did not understand how my first card, bought in '15, worked. I am still hesitant to dismantle that card to bring it back to its original state. Almost all of the fifteen further cards that he found for me are in good working order. I have made a short Youtube video to illustrate how each card works:...

Chocolat Payroud Scraps, 1900

File — Box: CFC Chocolate and Chicoree Cards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2018.0267.1-15
Abstract What a lovely, fragile group of fable illustrations. The colors are still vivid, even though the pieces are often slightly torn or bent. The cut, uneven edges raise a question whether these scraps came in the form they now have or were perhaps cut or punched out by the user. My favorite among these lovely fifteen scraps is TB. A friend with moustache is just grasping the tree which he will climb, and his partner is flat on the ground as the bear approaches with arms extended. I have...

Chocolat Poulain, 1895

Item — Box: CFC Trade Cards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2018.0269.1
Abstract

This card replicates one advertising "Aux Deux Passages." A surprising thing is that Chocolat Poulain used various kinds of fable cards to advertise. The curtsy here that invites the cicada to dance is beautifully rendered but downright mean!

Chocolat Poulain Gold Background Cards, 1910

File — Box: CFC Chocolate and Chicoree Cards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2018.0268.2.1-4
Abstract The scenes look familiar, even though they occupy only about 60% of the front of the card. The rest is "Chocolat Poulain: Goutez & Comparez" along with the title and first 25 words or so of the fable, presented in prose. I continue to struggle with the taste that has a male child acting the role of the dying father entrusting his treasured land to his children, or a female child acting the "old woman" here – elsewhere she is a nurse or mother – threatening to give the child to the...

Chocolaterie d'Aiguebelle, Extra of Les Deux Voyageurs, 1890

Item — Box: CFC Chocolate and Chicoree Cards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2018.0260.9
Abstract

Very pleasing cards, with better illustration work than on many such cards. The framing of the picture is done well, with a flowing ribbon moving up from the Aiguebelle credit at the bottom alongside the illustration and fable title and past the "Fables de Florian" group title at the top of the card. The verso presents the full fable text. The coloration reminds one of the coloring of fine "holy cards" in one-time Catholic grade schools.

Chocolaterie d'Aiguebelle, extras of Le Roi et les deux Bergers, 1890

Abstract

Chocolats Félix Potin, 1940

Item — Box: CFC Chocolate and Chicoree Cards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2021.0022.1
Abstract

This card seems so similar to many series we have found, yet I cannot connect it to any. The illustrated scene is quite original, since the town mouse appears with his wife or girlfriend, in lovely period costume. The town mouse seems surprised to find his cousin smoking a cigar in his field!

Chromo trade card of Goose and the Golden Egg, 1930

Item — Box: CFC Trade Cards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2021.0241.1
Abstract

This is one of those trade cards with lovely coloring and energetic action, here sadly that of killing the hen. There is nothing I can find on this card to identify who printed it or when.
